Car parts have numerous names, and it can be challenging to remember them all. However, knowing these names can make rescue operations smoother and ensure accurate information.
Exterior Parts of a Car
Let’s look at the names of parts and sections of a car’s exterior.
Pillar
The term “pillar” generally refers to a column, but in automotive terms, it means the vertical supports found around the windows of a car. These are named alphabetically from the front to the back: A-pillar, B-pillar, C-pillar, and D-pillar. Some cars might not have a B-pillar, in which case we refer to the remaining pillars accordingly.
In stabilization operations, tools like step chocks are placed under these pillars.
Bonnet (Hood)
The bonnet covers the engine compartment. It usually contains the car’s battery as well. Be careful not to cut the bonnet damper, as it contains high-pressure gas.
Roof
The roof is the top part of the car. It’s often made of metal but can also be plastic, aluminum, or carbon fiber to reduce weight. It can be easily cut with tools like reciprocating saws.
Bumper
Bumpers are located at the front and rear of the car (front bumper and rear bumper). They are typically plastic on the outside with a metal frame inside, designed to absorb impact and protect passengers.
Fender
Fenders cover the front and rear tires. They can be lifted manually to create space underneath the vehicle.
Side Sill
The side sill is located along the sides of the car’s body, under the doors.
Windshield
The windshield is the front glass of the car. It is made of laminated glass, which consists of two layers of glass with a plastic film in between. It doesn’t shatter like tempered glass and is cut using tools like glass masters or reciprocating saws.
Rear Window
The rear window is usually made of tempered glass and is located on the car’s back door.
Side Windows
Side windows are designed to break easily in emergencies, such as when the car is submerged in water. Striking a specific point can shatter the glass.
Interior Parts of a Car
Let’s explore the names and functions of the interior parts and components.
Dashboard (Instrument Panel)
The dashboard, or instrument panel (often shortened to “dash”), is located in front of the front seats. It is usually plastic on the outside but has a metal frame inside. It houses meters, switches, the audio system, navigation system, and glove box.
Gear Shift Lever
The gear shift lever is used to change gears. If the engine fails, the shift lock release button can be used to move the lever.
Center Console
The center console is between the driver’s and passenger’s seats, connected to the dashboard. It often includes switches, storage space, and sometimes the gear shift.
Steering Wheel
The steering wheel controls the angle of the front wheels. It often has a tilt feature to adjust its height.
Engine Components
Let’s cover the names and functions of components inside the engine.
Engine
The engine generates power by burning a mixture of fuel and air.
Radiator
The radiator prevents the engine from overheating by circulating coolant through it. This helps maintain a safe operating temperature and prevents engine damage.
Suspension
The suspension, also known as the “undercarriage,” includes various parts that allow the car to handle rough roads and corners smoothly.
