Many citizens visit the fire station for tours. Escorting visitors is an important job for firefighters. Never think of it as “bothersome” or “something you don’t want to do.” Please provide the utmost hospitality to the visitors. The memories made at the fire station will last a lifetime. Your kindness to the citizens will eventually come back to you as a benefit.

Here are some of the contents of the tour. Please refer to them.
Explanation of the Fire Station
- Explain the number of fire stations in the area, the number of fire trucks, the number of fires, and the number of emergency calls.
- People are often surprised by the high number of emergency calls.
- Promote the installation of residential alarms and home fire extinguishers. Explain that alarms and extinguishers should be replaced every ten years.
- Teach children how to dial 119 (emergency number).
Facility Tour
- Show the office, cafeteria, and sleeping quarters.
- In the office, explain the work of each department.
- In the sleeping quarters, explain that firefighters sleep with their gear and socks on.
- Explain that the fire gear lockers are designed for quick access. For example, the pants and boots are paired together.
- Show a fire hydrant. Many people don’t know what’s inside as they rarely see it opened. Explain the number of hydrants in the area and demonstrate how water is drawn.
Fire Truck Tour
- Let visitors ride the fire truck and see the inside.
- Let them touch and hold the fire hoses. They will be surprised by the difference from household hoses.
- Have them wear the breathing apparatus. Explain that the fire gear and breathing apparatus together weigh about 20 kg.
- Explain the mechanism of the water pump and the nozzle.
- Explain other equipment as well.
Firefighting Activity Demonstration
- Show a training session where firefighters put on their gear, get into the vehicle, and perform a water discharge drill. This is a great opportunity for visitors to see what firefighters do during training.
- Visitors are impressed by the speed of putting on the gear and the amount of water discharged.
- Make sure to give loud and clear commands and responses.
Firefighter Experience
- Divide into three booths for experiences: “Water Discharge Experience,” “Fire Gear Experience,” and “Fire Extinguisher Experience.”
Water Discharge Experience
- Let visitors actually discharge water from a pump truck and experience the power of the water. If there is a target, have them aim at it.
Fire Gear Experience
- Have visitors wear the fire gear and feel its weight. For children, provide child-sized fire gear. They will be delighted to wear the mask and breathing apparatus.
Fire Extinguisher Experience
- Use practice water extinguishers to explain how to use a fire extinguisher.
Commemorative Photo
- Finally, take a commemorative photo to capture the memories. Many people are hesitant to ask for a photo, so offer to take one for them.
