Recommended Method for Window Rescues

For effective window rescues, position the victim on their back and pull them towards the window feet first. Ensure their legs are raised towards the window frame while their hips remain against the wall.

  • Rescuers’ Roles:
    • An outside firefighter holds the victim’s ankles.
    • Two firefighters inside lift and pull the victim into the room.

Ladders for Access, Escape, and Rescue

When placing a ladder for escape or rescue, position the ladder so its tip aligns with the window frame.

  • For balconies or fire escapes, extend the ladder 2–4 rungs above the balcony level.
  • Ideal Ladder Angles:
    • The ladder should be angled between 60 and 75 degrees.
    • 75 degrees is optimal, but other angles within the range are acceptable depending on the situation.

Ground Ladder Rescues

When rescuing people seen leaning out of windows, two firefighters should carry and position the ladder below the victim.

  • If necessary, add a second ladder parallel to the first. This provides additional stability and allows more rescuers to assist simultaneously.
  • Victim Handling:
    • Guide the victim out feet first, facing the rescuer.
    • Direct their legs to one side of the ladder while placing the rescuer’s arm between the victim’s legs.
    • Secure the ladder rail from behind.
    • When lifting the victim’s torso, place your arms under their armpits and grip the rail from the back.
    • During descent, slide your hands along the ladder rails to ensure smooth movement.

Converting a Window into a Door

After locating the victim, evaluate whether to convert the window into a makeshift door for easier access.

  • Consider converting the window in cases like:
    • Large victims who are difficult to move through the window.
    • Insufficient rescue personnel.
    • Obstacles like furniture blocking the path.
    • Scenarios requiring multiple rescues.

Challenges in Window Rescues

One of the most difficult aspects of window rescues is lifting the victim from the floor to the window frame. Proper technique, teamwork, and preparation are critical to overcoming this challenge and ensuring a successful rescue.
