Rescue Operations for a Person Trapped Under a Vehicle

Essential Vehicle Rescue procedures to safely free a person trapped under a vehicle. Learn stabilization, hand lifting, and the use of air mats, cranes, and winches.

Activities of the Rescue Team

  1. Ensure Safety of Surroundings
    • Use pylons to create a secure area.
  2. Check the Accident Vehicles
    • Confirm the number of vehicles involved.
    • Check for oil leaks or other hazards.
  3. Identify Injured Persons (Rescuees)
    • Determine the number of rescuees.
    • Assess the severity of their injuries.
  4. Stabilize the Vehicle
    • Use wheel chocks, step chocks, and cribs to securely stabilize the vehicle.
    • Do not enter the vehicle until it is fully stabilized to prevent further injury to the rescuees due to vehicle movement.

Lifting by Hand

  • Most cases of being trapped under a vehicle can be resolved by lifting the vehicle by hand.
  • If a person is trapped by the bumper or side sill, lifting the vehicle at the fender can create space underneath as the suspension rises.
Vehicle Rescue

Procedure:

  1. Lift the vehicle and insert step chocks under the pillars.
    • This can create about a 10 cm space, depending on the situation.
    • Ensure to insert step chocks on both sides before lifting to prevent narrowing the space by tilting the vehicle.
  2. If the vehicle has minimal tire puncture or deformation, a go-jack can be used for rescue.

When Hand Lifting is Impossible

  • For large vehicles, lifting by hand is not feasible.
  • Use air mats, vehicle cranes, or winches.

Using Air Mats:

  1. Insert the air mats under the axle and lift.
    • The axle is strong and less likely to deform.

Using Vehicle Cranes or Winches:

  1. Wrap a wire or sling around the axle or tire.
  2. Lift the vehicle using the crane or winch.

Ladder Lift

  • When hand lifting is difficult, use a crib as a fulcrum and a ladder to lift the vehicle.
